WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF DEL MONTE CANNED PRODUCTS?
As a guideline, Del Monte® canned products have a shelf-life of about 2 to 3 years from the date of production. This assumes the can isn't dented or damaged, and the product is stored under normal conditions. After that time, the color, flavor and texture of the food may begin to deteriorate, although the contents would still be safe. We do recommend that any swollen or leaking containers be discarded, regardless of their age.
The majority of our canned products contain a 'Best By' date on the can. If you have a Del Monte® canned product without a "Best By" date, or you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF A DEL MONTE PRODUCT AFTER IT IS OPENED?
After opening, canned foods should retain their original quality for at least 2 to 3 days when refrigerated and sealed in a plastic or glass container. Del Monte® Ketchup and Jarred Products will retain their quality for 1 to 2 weeks when stored in the refrigerator.

WHAT IS A "GMO?"
GMO is an acronym for "Genetically Modified Organism." This term is commonly used to refer to foods that have been derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified through the direct introduction of a gene from a different organism in a laboratory vs. traditional plant breeding methods.
WHAT DOES "NON-GMO" MEAN?
No genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are present in Del Monte products that are labeled "Non-GMO."
HOW DOES DEL MONTE CERTIFY PRODUCTS AS "NON-GMO"?
In 2015, we have verified on our labels that 70 of our best-selling vegetable and tomato products are Non-GMO. Applying FDA and EU standards, Del Monte self-certifies our Non-GMO products by obtaining and continually updating records for all of the ingredients in our Non-GMO labeled products. We also conduct analytical testing on each product and monitor our suppliers’ analytical testing results to ensure Non-GMO status.
In 2016, we worked with the USDA to verify our sweet corn products as non-genetically modified resulting in the USDA certification, "USDA Process Verified Non-GE/GMO". Del Monte is the first consumer products company ever to meet USDA’s strict criteria to qualify for their Non-GMO process verification program. This process goes to great lengths to ensure that Del Monte’s sweet corn is not mutated or impacted by “drift” pollination that can occur when our specialty sweet corn is grown in areas near genetically modified commodity corn. Look for the USDA Process Verified Non-GE/GMO claim on our corn products some time later this year.
WHY ARE ONLY SOME OF DEL MONTE'S PRODUCTS LABELED "NON-GMO"?
The fruit, vegetables and tomatoes we use in our products have always been Non-GMO, but some of our added ingredients for sweeteners or flavorings have been sourced from genetically modified crops like corn or soybeans.
In 2015, Del Monte Foods began labeling many of our vegetable and tomato products as Non-GMO (70 products in total). In 2016, we will be labeling all of our vegetables, fruit cups and many more tomato products as Non-GMO. In addition, efforts are currently underway with our suppliers to verify their ingredients’ non-GMO status, and, where necessary, to assure a consistent supply of replacement ingredients in order to label our remaining qualified products as non-GMO.
ARE GMOs SAFE?
The FDA, USDA, World Health Organization, and the American Medical Association have concluded that products containing genetically engineered ingredients are safe. Even though there are no health risks (allergens or negative nutrients) associated with GMOs, we decided to provide information about GMOs in our products to consumers so that they can make informed choices.
For more information, visit Facts About GMOs.
WHAT IS BPA (Bisphenol-A)?
BPA is the basic organic building block for polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Epoxy resins are used as lining on the inside of many food and beverage cans, can ends and jar lids. Linings on the interior surface of a can make it possible for food products to maintain their nutritional value and taste, and are essential to prevent food contamination or spoilage. BPA itself is not added directly to food or even used directly in lining the cans. Instead, cans are lined with epoxy resins, of which BPA is a component. Its job is to make the plastic flexible so it completely covers the inside of the can. Based on extensive research, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and many other regulatory agencies around the world have concluded that BPA is safe to use in packaging.
DOES YOUR PACKAGING USE BPA-BASED LININGS?
In 2016, we converted 100% of our branded tomato products, and nearly 100% of our branded fruit and vegetable products to Non-BPA linings.
WHAT IS DEL MONTE USING INSTEAD OF BPA IN ITS CAN LININGS?
The alternative lining material for our vegetable and fruit products is made with a polyester material; and the alternative used for our tomato cans is a vinyl lining. The linings comply with all FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) standards. The coating components are also EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and REACH (Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) compliant. The new linings meet the requirements of California’s Prop. 65, do not contain phthalates, and do not contain BPA (Bisphenol-A).
DO YOU PRODUCE ANY PRODUCTS IN NON-BPA CANS AND PLASTIC PACKAGING ?
Our plastic cups, plastic bottles, pouches and bags, paper cartons and sleeves, aseptic cartons and glass jars do not use resins that contain BPA.
